Oystercrush 2013!
Oyster lovers were at The Yacht Club at Marina Shores in Virginia Beach, VA this past weekend to attend Oyster Crush 2013! Hosted by the Cape Henry Rotary. Proceeds went local charities, a favorite local area cover band The Deloreans provided live entertainment, and there were raffles for door prizes. Over 1500 tickets were sold for the event!
Over 10,000 oysters fresh from the Bay were consumed attendees; the oysters were provided by Little Sully’s Clams on the Eastern Shore. In addition to oysters and clams, local BBQ came from Suffolk’s Rodman’s Bar-B-Que, World-Famous Clam Chowder from Redfearn’s, and all of it washed down with beer provided by Hoffman Beverage company—a special treat was having Smartmouth Saison Ale on tap!
The oysters were delicious! They were available raw or roasted, tables were setup for shucking. The raw were particularly popular with weaving lines, converging on the single table serving them. The crew working that table had to be the busiest of the day.
10,000 oysters leave a lot shells, the Oyster Crush shells will be donated to Lynnhaven River Now for restoration efforts. If you missed this year’s event, make sure you save the date for Oyster Crush 2014, September 21st of next year.

Ribtoberfest 2013
The first annual Ribtoberfest made its debut at Town Point Park, downtown Norfolk, VA. The venue was packed for BBQ fans lining up for a taste of the smoked meats. A battery of craft brew was lined up and serving the thirsty patrons with local beers from Smartmouth, O’Connor, Beach Brewery, Back Bay, and many more. The weather was perfect along with the food, outdoor entertainment and music was provided for all to enjoy.

Young Veterans Brewing Co. Tap Take-over at The Porch
To help kick off Young Veterans Brewing Co.’s grand opening recently, The Porch hosted a tap take-over featuring the brewery’s beer. Great turnout and the first keg (Even Keel I believe) was empty in 25 minutes.
Cheap & Cheery - Sep 2013
This month’s Cheap & Cheery at Grape and Gourmet was special because both Deb and Spencer had their birthdays this week! Shelby and I bought cupcakes from Twisted Sisters and lit candles for them in the shop. Everyone in the store sang “Happy Birthday” and gave them a round of applause afterwards. Love this shop.

Young Veterans Brewing Co. Grand Opening
Young Veterans Brewing Company opened its doors to the public this past weekend. The turn out was great and the beer spectacular. The taps were all manned, offering a taste of what the area will be enjoying at their local bar or grocery.
Malbon’s was there with their truck selling tacos and BBQ, the line to get inside to order a beer snaked past it. People were chatting and excited about the new Virginia Beach brewery. The 1st place winner in both local Battle of the Beers “Jet Noise” was popular, as was the Pineapple Grenade, and Semper Fi.

Young Veterans Brewing Company’s Jet Noise took home 1st and their Pineapple snagged 2nd. O’Connor Brewing coming in 3rd with their new Sasion. 80/20 Burger Bar provided the space and they kept some great food rolling out of the kitchen. To top it all off, the weather was perfect. Fun stuff.

Battle of the Beers - Norfolk Edition
Battle of the Beers - Norfolk vs. Virginia Beach. Tapped Gastropub in Virginia Beach, VA hosted a friendly competition allowing locals to try beer from the area breweries. Proceeds went toward a benefit for Seton Youth Shelters and the event put together by Beach Ambassadors was highly successful.
Young Veterans Brewing Company won the trophy for their Jet Noise—A double IPA. O’Connor Brewing Company, Smartmouth Brewing Company, Beach Brewing Company, and Back Bay Brewing Company.

Wine Bank & Beer Vault
Saw this little wine/beer shop in University Place, WA and stopped by; Wine Bank & Beer Vault is locally owned and had decent selection of area beers and wines. We spent a little time browsing around and picked up a variety of local brews and a bottle of wine from Columbia Valley.
Bonus: I also bought a bottle of Russian River Damnation. They said they weren’t shipping that far north for awhile.

Milo's 1st Birthday
Recently we were invited to our friends’ son’s 1st Birthday Party. Ken’s family is Filipino and that means tons of food! It was all so good that I told Ken if they don’t quit feeding me like this I’ll never leave. He said welcome to the family.
